Magnesium anodes, also known as sacrificial anodes or protective anodes, reliably protect domestic hot water storage tanks against corrosion. This corrosion can occur due to defects in the enamel/coating, internal components, and threaded connections. Buffer tanks used with untreated heating water can also be protected against corrosion using magnesium anodes.

The lifespan of an anode can vary considerably. Annual inspection is recommended. The use of signal anodes or "insulated installation" greatly simplifies the annual inspection. Replacement is required when the anode has degraded by two-thirds or the protection current is less than 0.3 mA.
